Today I started making the birthday cake for the boy’s birthday party. Since we are having a rainbow/hot air balloon themed party, the cake will be a rainbow layer cake (7 layers of cake in rainbow colours). Which I’m sure you can imagine is a lot of baking!
I’ve decided to just use packet mix cakes (2 and a bit boxes of cake), each box will be divided into 3 colours. I’ve decided to make some chocolate covered cake balls with the left over cake mix and take the for playgroup.
I’m simply using liquid food colouring to make the cakes the colours of the rainbow, using vanilla cake mix. I’ve bought two of the same size square cake tin and am cooking two at a time in our new oven. All the layers will be frozen until the day before when I assemble the cake, putting icing between each layer. The cake is going to be in the design of a hot air balloon basket, with a real balloon for the top.
Here is the first of the cakes baking in the oven.
