I was having a look at some cute patterns for dolls and toys (softies) today online at Dolls and Daydreams. I really loved everything I saw, but in particular the little red riding hood, wolf and three pigs. Alice in wonderland was also amazing (but hard to make this one applicable to little boys!).
Looking at them, I thought about buying the pattern to make the toys for my little boys but then had the crazy idea “what if I gave it a go myself.” I’ve made patterns from pictures before, so why not give it a try. I really had nothing to lose! Making a pattern is just a bit of paper and some time And fortunately, I had the time today as Gran was visiting and playing with the boys.
Hesitantly I started, but once I had, there was no stopping me. I drew up the pattern and then it was time to find some fabric to see if it would work. (I decided to make red riding hood first rather than the wolf as I knew I would have the fabric I needed to make her). I found everything I needed, cut her out, ironed on the interfacing and then worked out how to sew her. She was actually really easy to make. I finished all the sewing done on the machine before putting Addi to bed, then did the hand sewn parts (buttons, lace etc) after that.
Here she is, all finished!! I have to say I’m very proud of her, having never made anything like this before. Plus it was a pretty detailed pattern to make from scratch. About the only thing I would probably change a little would be her cape.
I am however in a bit of a moral dilemma. I’m not sure it would be right of me to put the pattern up that I made since the original inspiration of the doll came from someone that sells the pattern. While mine isn’t exactly the same, I’m not sure that it would be right of me to put my pattern up for free, when she is trying to make a business of selling them. What are your thoughts?
Next I have to try and make a pattern for the wolf and gather my supplies. Eventually I’ll make some piggies too so that the wolf can be used for both stories. I might make myself an Alice eventually as I just love her!
Well, Melissa, she looks really good and I really enjoyed my part playing with and cuddling two beautiful grandsons. I know how important it is for you to be able to do something for yourself and your creativity needs to be released from time to time. Hope it was a relaxing time overall. I tend to agree with you that it might be best to let the other lady have the sale of her patterns without competing with your free ones – but maybe people could email you if they really want yours instead – and can you advertise her website or do you have to check with her first?
I’m so proud of myself and how she turned out! Considering I was pretty unsure if I could do it in the first place. Yes I do need to have some time for me every now and then. Doesn’t happen very often though, so I’m very thankful! I think emailing for the pattern is a great idea. I might post a link and let people know that if they want the pattern they can contact me. I will have to get all my patterns online (so many just sitting there since my scanner is not working). Charles said I could take them into his work one day and scan them all. Just have to find a moment! I can promote her, of course (was considering doing a style file on them too). I always contact people if I’m going to use a lot of their images, but if it’s a one off I just make sure I link or mention the original source if I know it. I just try to do the right thing by everyone, but I’m only trying to promote businesses…not harm them in any way.
Looks great Melissa!! I enjoy the challenge of making my own patterns too! There is a great sense of accomplishment at the end, especially when they look as good as little red riding hood :-))
Btw. The style files look Fanatastic, I’d be really honoured to have one created. Thank you, you have made my day.
Leanne
Thanks Leanne!! They are great fun to make. I can’t wait to do the three little pigs. I’ve made the patterns ready for them, I just have to find some time. That’s easier said than done! Plus I’m more than happy to make a style file for you, it would be my pleasure!
